Background

Following an initial meeting held in March 2008, predominantly attended by Fradley residents, a committee was formed to tackle two primary objectives:

  1. The Governments ECO-TOWN agenda, listing Curborough Town as one its proposed locations, an application
for which was submitted to the Lichfield District Council by The Curborough Consortium.
  2. The Curborough Consortium plans which had been submitted to the Lichfield District Council and which were similar to the eco-town proposals but without the eco badge.

As a group of duly elected representatives, we outlined a mission statement designed to tackle these objectives:

  • To scrutinise and challenge the validity of the Eco Towns agenda.
  • To scrutinise and challenge the Curborough Town proposal.
  • To ensure residents are aware of, and take the opportunity to, consider the implications of the proposal.
  • To ensure the views of those residents who wish to act collectively through FACT are properly represented in the
    planning application process.
  • To encourage and support all residents to individually participate in the planning process and express their views.
  • To ensure locally elected representatives at all levels are held accountable for the manner in which they represent
their community in relation to this proposal.

Committee Members:

Richard Holloway – Chairman,
Jan Green – Secretary,
Peter Evans – Treasurer,
Chris Rushworth,
Chris Gillie,
Danny Bryant,
Alan and Margaret King,
Peter Lennon,
Ed Briggs,
Mick Foulkes

We reviewed both proposals from an ECO and NON-ECO perspective and sent our objections to both the DCLG and LDC respectively.
A copy of these documents can be found within our library page.

As a result of the ECO-TOWN submission, a rally in London with other eco-town campaign groups, and a subsequent meeting with the Housing Minister, Caroline Flint MP on 30th June 2008, The Curborough Consortium removed its bid to develop an ECO town in Curborough.

However, the consortium has decided to continue to pursue a normal large scale development within the Fradley area. These plans will be dealt with under the local planning system.

“ECO maybe dead but the TOWN lives on”
